During courtship, the lyrebird spreads out its curved plumage in a seductive dance. However, the Australian animal is best known for its perfect imitation of environmental sounds. The transition between seduction and manipulation is fluid as the bird imitates not only technical noises but also predators so that the bird to be seduced remains in search of protection.
One of the most fascinating - and controversial - developments in technology is the cloning of voices. With the help of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), we can create digital replicas of human voices (deepfakes) with astounding accuracy.
The Code Poems refer to the breach of trust by the Canadian start-up Lyrebird AI. The curly brackets { }, which are reminiscent of the feathers of birds as seen in the filtered picture, indicate instructions in the code, the Method Bodies. With the promise of being open source, the company trained and reproduced an AI for voice imitation with countless voice examples from users and later sold its technology, including the voice collection, for a profit. This is considered a common practice.
